Catching Masterclass Technique

Ben Cohen has come through the junior club route, through the Northampton Saints youth system to World Cup winning glory. Ben is now one of the most recognised players in world rugby and certainly one of the best wingers. Over to you Ben to take us through some skills for catching!

Catching above the Head

  •  1. Always try to attack the ball, even if you need to retreat to come forwards on to the ball.
  • 2. Always take off on the outside leg (if catching a cross field kick) and drive your inside knee upwards towards the ball.
  • 3. Extend your arms towards the ball with your elbows slightly bent and your fingers pointing towards the sky.

  •  4. Watch the ball into the hands and cushion the catch by bending your elbows on contact.
  • 5. Take the ball at the highest possible point

Catching the High Ball

  • 1. Always try to attack the ball, even if you need to retreat to come forwards on to the ball.
  • 2. Take off on your preferred leg and drive the other knee upwards.
  • 3. Create a cradle with your two arms and use your chest as a third arm.
  • 4. Watch the ball into the arms and cushion the impact of the ball.
  • 5. Take the ball at the highest possible point.

Catching Practise Drills

 Catching Drill
  • 1. Simply put one player in a grid and another player outside to kick or throw the ball into the grid.
  • 2. Practise taking the ball above the head and on the chest using the techniques already discussed.
  • 3. Vary the direction from which the ball arrives into the square, so that the drill replicates match situations
