Throwing In Technique
Lee Mears is arguably one of he best hookers in the Premiership, and having emerged from the shadows of his rivals at Bath Rugby, his credentials have been fully endorsed at International level.
So, lets go through the four steps of throwing in with Lee!
 |
Step 1: Hand position on the ball
- Hold the ball between a central point and backward point
(This means holding the ball with your slightly stronger hand on the top side of the ball and your support hand slightly underneath the ball)
|
 |
Step 2: Set the position of the ball
- Set the position of the ball to start the throw
- Place the ball above your head
- Elbows tucked in and the ball in the trigger point
|
 |
Step 3: Feet position for the throw
- Place your feet shoulder width apart
- Toes pointing towards the target
- Knees bent
- Feet up on their balls using a tight core
|
 |
Step 4: Delivery of the Ball
- To deliver the ball, push with the hands through always keeping a tight core
- Rock up onto the balls of your feet
- Follow through with your hands aiming towards the target

Throwing In Throwing in Drills
Target Drills
Target drills are some of the best practices to do. All you need is a post or a mark/target on a wall, some cones and a ball.
To practice the drill, all you need to do is set up three different throw points.
Go through your setup drills and throw towards the set target
When you get into a routine start setting yourself goals for accuracy i.e. 8/10 on the front cone, 6/10 for the second cone and 5/10 on the furthest cone
DO NOT rush this drill and try over a period of time to improve your accuracy.
